Information for Doctors
Port Systems
The POLYSITE ports range available in the South African market includes the venous large and small 8.5F high flow ports, Paediatric, and ports with an anti-kinking device. Non-thrombogenic XRO silicone catheters and PUR catheters are available. The PolyPerf port needle range includes different gauges and needle lengths.
POLYPERF Port Needles
POLYPERF needles are designed to access implantable port systems. The needle has an integrated extension tube with a Luer-lock connection. The low-profile design eliminates the need for bulky dressings. Once in place, the wings stabilize the needle, protects the access site and increases patient comfort.
POLYPERF Safety needles set the standard for needlestick protection. By allowing removal in one easy, natural motion that locks the needle into place, nursing staff are better protected from rebound needlesticks. Using a transparent SorbaView dressing that can remain in place for at least 7 days over the needle completes the procedure for securing the port needle in the port during treatment.

Information for Patients
A port is a means of accessing the body's veins for the delivery of treatment and taking blood samples for analysis. The product consists of a small, round, hollow device with a thick silicone membrane on the top and a catheter or tube that goes into the blood vessel. People who may need to have a port include those who require chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer, medication for other conditions such as Cystic Fibrosis, long-term antibiotic treatment, TPN, treatment of haemophilia and others. The port is inserted by a doctor under the skin, often on the chest wall, and has a catheter that is inserted into a blood vessel. This is done under general or local anaesthetic, but is a quick procedure. Once the port has been placed the blood vessel can be accessed using a special port needle through the silicone membrane which can be used 1000- 2000 times using the correct needle. When not in use, the port must be washed (flushed) with a special solution every 4-6 weeks to prevent blood clots from forming.
Advantages of having a port
Chemotherapy often damages the veins making treatment difficult and painful. By using a port, treatment is easy, safe and virtually pain-free
By using a dual port, two treatments can be given at once
Continuous ambulatory treatment using a MiniPump with a port allows home-based treatment
