Infusion Pumps

Disposable, portable MiniPumps provide continuous infusion by means of a silicone balloon pump.

 Information for Doctors and Nurses

The MiniPump has a silicone elastomeric balloon that compresses evenly, to provide a continuous infusion varying from 1 to 8 days in duration (10mls/hour to 0.5mls/hour). The MiniPump is available in 3 sizes, 60ml, 100ml and 275ml balloons.

The continuous dosage is governed by the volume and flow rate selected. The flow rate is accurate and constant throughout the infusion because of an in-line flow restrictor, which also prevents free flow. The micro-bore tubing ensures minimal dead space and the in-line filter absorbs air bubbles and filters out micro particles.

Indications for use

  • Cancer Chemotherapy
The MiniPump can be used to deliver chemotherapy usually through a port or central line, antibiotics and pain management.
  • Thallasaemia
Patients with Thallasaemia can receive subcutaneous Desferel via the MiniPump.
  • Anaesthesia
The MiniPump is also ideal for use in pain control using the continuous infusion with the PCA module. Plexus blocks for regional anaesthesia are also an ideal indication for the MiniPump.
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
The MiniPump is an ideal vehicle for giving continuous infusions of corticosteroids.

 Information for Patients

A MiniPump consists of a rigid outer case with an elastic balloon to contain medication. When connected to the body by means of a plastic tube, the balloon contracts forcing fluid containing the medication to the body. The rate of flow of the medication is controlled by means of a flow restrictor. An in-line filter will filter out any unwanted particles and air. The MiniPump is connected to a suitable needle for insertion into the body.

Depending on the size of the MiniPump and the flow rate selected, a single infusion can last between one and eight days. Your doctor will decide which is the most suitable for you depending on the nature of the treatment. Zebra Medical supply you with a waist pouch to carry the MiniPump around with you.

Advantages of using a MiniPump

  • It obviates the need to attend daily clinics to receive treatment
  • By being portable, it means that you can continue your normal activities of daily living
